Shikaku: how a round works
Open Shikaku, check the instructions and begin a round. Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.
Solve ten 5×5 rectangle puzzles. Each clue belongs to exactly one rectangle of the stated area.
Bring this focus to a round
Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Keep the objective visible.
The purpose of your moves
Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. The example below illustrates a decision.
The order of play
- Choose a rectangle’s opposite corners.
- It must contain one clue and have the matching area.
- Click an existing rectangle to remove it.
- Cover every square to finish.
Controls
Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. A new-round button replaces the current round.
Learn from a sample situation
A clue 6 may occupy a 2×3 rectangle when other clues allow it. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the game’s format in mind.
One detail worth checking
No rectangle may contain two clues or overlap another. A different version of the game may use a different rule. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
